WHAT ARE YOU CURRENTLY READING?

A Chorus Rises by Bethany C. Morrow- I read A Song Below Water last year, and honestly didn’t enjoy it all that much. I requested this ARC without knowing it was the sequel. This picks up right where book 1 left off, and so far it is okay, but I don’t think it will be a new favorite.

Starry Eyes by Jenn Bennett- After reading and enjoying Serious Moonlight a few months ago, I decided to pick up pretty much all of Jenn Bennett’s books because I need more contemporary on my shelves. I have heard really great things about Starry Eyes, and so far I really like it! It follows a group of teenagers going on a summer camping trip, and is a perfect summer read so far.

Emma by Jane Austen- There are a few classics I wanted to get to before school starts up again, Emma being one of them. I have never seen the movie, so this story is brand new to me. I am making my way through this slowly, but am enjoying it so far!

WHAT HAVE YOU RECENTLY FINISHED?

A Pho Love Story by Loan Le- I’ve seen really mixed things about this book, but I really liked it! This is very reminiscent of Meet Cute, following the children of two rival restaurants. The Vietnamese culture in this novel was definitely what stood out the most. I do think it did drag on a bit, though.

Namesake by Adrienne Young- Can we talk about this cover? I am obsessed. This is the sequel to Fable, which I unfortunately liked more than its sequel. This was just a really slow paced book. The plot was essentially seeing who could obtain the most power, and I just didn’t care that much. There were also so many characters who all just kind of blended together in my head.

WHAT WILL YOU READ NEXT?

What a great question! I have no idea what I’ll be reading next, but here are some possibilities.

Dial A for Aunties by Jesse Q Sutanto- My friend read this recently and loved it, so I requested a hold from my local library! I believe this is a murder mystery romcom, where the main character has to ask her aunts to help her hide a body. The blurb says this book dives into Chinese-Indonesian culture, which sounds super interesting as well!

To Kill a Kingdom by Alexandra Christo- This has literally been on my TBR since it came out, and is on my must-read list for summer. This is an enemies-to-lovers Little Mermaid retelling, which is all I needed to know before picking it up.

Let me know what you’re reading in the comments below!

WWW Wednesday: 6.23.2021

I haven’t done a WWW Wednesday in awhile, and I wanted to do one today because I am in the midst of reading some super great books!

WWW Wednesday is hosted by Taking on a World of Words. To participate, all you have to do is simply answer the 3 W’s.

WHAT ARE YOU CURRENTLY READING?

Daughter of the Siren Queen by Tricia Levenseller- This is the sequel to Daughter of the Pirate King, a book I devoured a few months ago! This book definitely has the same energy and fast-paced plot! I am enjoying it so far.

The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue by V.E. Schwab- I know, how late in the game am I? Regardless, I am happy I have finally decided to pick this book up! I am not getting through it as quickly as I would like, just because it is so long. But I am still enjoying Addie’s story and can’t wait to see where it goes!

WHAT HAVE YOU RECENTLY FINISHED?

Enchantee by Gita Trelease- This was a re-read for me, and it was a lot of fun to be back in this world! While this was one of my favorite books when I read it 2 years ago, it didn’t hold up for me as much as I would have liked. Regardless, it was fun and I’ll be reading the sequel soon!

The Phantom of the Opera by Gaston Leroux- I am so happy I finally got around to this classic! I love the musical, so reading the book was so much fun, as I got to see a deeper level of the characters and see how the story changed when they adapted it. I would definitely recommend this to any phans out there!

WHAT WILL YOU READ NEXT?

One Last Stop by Casey McQuiston- My hold from the library is finally ready, so I definitely need to get to this before it expires! Obviously, I love RW&RB so I have very high expectations for this.

I Wanna Be Where You Are by Kristina Forest- I really liked the other Kristina Forest book I read last summer, so I am really excited to give her debut novel a try! It is short, so I have a feeling I will fly through it.

WWW Wednesday: 5.26.2021

I haven’t done a WWW Wednesday in awhile, and I wanted to do one today because I am in the midst of reading some super great books!

I also want to mention that I began a page where I made a list of diverse reading recommendations. I have really been trying to focus on reading at least 50% own voices novels this year, so if you have a similar goal or just want to diversify your reading in general, hopefully you can use the list as a resource! You can find it here.

WWW Wednesday is hosted by Taking on a World of Words. To participate, all you have to do is simply answer the 3 W’s.

What Are You Currently Reading?

Malibu Rising by Taylor Jenkins Reid- I received an ARC of this and am really hoping to finish it before it comes out next week. I am only about 10% of the way through this so far, but I am loving the famous family vibes, and obviously TJR’s writing is amazing.

Cool for the Summer by Dahlia Adler- This is just the shortest, cutest contemporary! I am having fun with it, although someone said the characters felt under-developed and I’d have to agree. But it is certainly the perfect summer read!

American Panda by Gloria Chao- This was the final book on my May TBR (Me, actually sticking to a TBR? Who would’ve thought!), so I really want to finish it. So far it is fun, and I like that it follows a college aged student rather than a high schooler!

What Have You Recently Finished?

This Time Will Be Different by Misa Sugiura- I really picked this up on a whim and I’m happy I did! This was a really great book with great Japanese-American representation, and shows how Japanese families are still recovering from the internment that took place in World War II. I also loved the writing style, it was fun and kind of reminded me of Nicola Yoon.

We Hunt the Flame by Hafsah Faizal- I have really mixed feelings about this book. On one hand, the writing was absolutely beautiful and I loved the atmosphere. On the other hand, I felt so unbelievably bored because nothing was happening. The two main characters were also too similar for my taste.

What Will You Read Next?

All-American Muslim Girl by Nadine Jolie Courtney- This book has been on my shelves for awhile now, and it is finally time to pick it up! This follows a Muslim high schooler who begins to date the son of the most conservative man in town, and feels like she has to hide her religion from her new boyfriend. I’ve had my eye on this for awhile and can’t wait to read it.

A Chorus Rises by Bethany C. Morrow- I requested this ARC before I knew it was the companion to A Song Below Water, which I didn’t really like that much. But hopefully I have better luck with this one, though I am a bit skeptical.

WWW Wednesday- 4.14.2021

It’s Wednesday, friends, which means it is time for another WWW Wednesday post! I have been in a bit of a reading slump lately, since finals are quickly approaching. I am so excited for summer where I will just be able to relax and read!

WWW Wednesday is hosted by Taking on a World of Words. To participate, all you have to do is simply answer the 3 W’s.

WHAT ARE YOU CURRENTLY READING?

A Reaper at the Gates by Sabaa Tahir- I do not know why I thought it would be a good idea to pick up this high fantasy in the middle of the most stressful month of the year, but here I am! I will say, I am not enjoying it as much as I would like. I’m not sure if this is because I am stressed, or if it is the book itself. I just feel like there is so much going on, but also nothing happening at the same time.

Cemetery Boys by Aiden Thomas- After reading Lost in the Never Woods by this same author, I decided I need to give their debut novel a try! I literally just started this, but so far I am enjoying it and love the atmosphere.

WHAT HAVE YOU RECENTLY READ?

Anxious People by Fredrik Backman- After feeling slumpy for a few days, I though maybe I just needed to pick up something a bit different than usual, so I decided to read some literary fiction. Unfortunately, I just don’t think that genre is really for me. I definitely understand the appeal because this book had some great character development, but I needed some more action.

Clockwork Angel by Cassandra Clare- Ahhh, The Infernal Devices. This is the first YA fantasy series that I have ever fallen in love with, so I decided to do a re-read to see if it holds up for me. And thank goodness, it did. In fact, I loved it even more the second time around. I will definitely be finishing my re-read of this series over the summer.

WHAT WILL YOU READ NEXT?

Oh goodness, who knows. I have so many ARCs I need to get to, but I probably won’t pick up anything new until after finals. However, here are some books I would like to pick up soon:

Hot British Boyfriend by Kristy Boyce- This has been on my TBR for awhile, and I am really excited to read it! I love fluffy contemporaries during the summer, so I am hoping I fly through this. (Plus, Kristy Boyce teaches at my university, which is super cool)

The Inheritance Games by Jennifer Lynn Barnes- I have heard such good things about this, and I think a fast paced mystery is exactly what I need right now!

What are you reading right now? Let’s have a chat in the comments below!

WHAT ARE YOU CURRENTLY READING?

Blood & Honey by Shelby Mahurin- I was warned that this book isn’t on the same level as Serpent & Dove, and I have to say that I agree. I am only about 25% of the way in and so far I feel like nothing super monumental has happened, it is is mostly filler. But I still love Lou and Reid, so I hope the final book makes this read worth it!

Girl, Serpent, Thorn by Melissa Bashardoust- I literally *just* started this, I’m not even 10 pages in yet. But I have had this book on my shelves for months, so I am excited to finally be reading it!

WHAT HAVE YOU RECENTLY READ?

Daughter of the Pirate King by Tricia Levenseller- I picked this book up on a whim, and I am so happy that I did because it was so much fun! It was easy, fast paced, with an angsty enemies to lovers romance that I adored! I will 100% be picking up book 2 because I just want more of this story!

The Song of Achilles by Madeline Miller- I will admit, I was a bit skeptical of this book until the halfway point. I thought there was no way I would like this book as much as everyone else, but I was proven wrong. The ending had me crying, just like everyone said it would. Definitely a new favorite book of mine!

WHAT WILL YOU READ NEXT?

A Cuban Girl’s Guide to Tea and Tomorrow by Laura Taylor Namey- For some reason I was under the impression this was a fantasy, but it is clearly a contemporary. But either way, this seems like a quick, fun read the cover looks perfect for springtime!

Kisses and Croissants by Anne-Sophie Jouhanneau- This is an ARC that comes out April 5, and it also looks perfect for spring! I’m not entirely sure what it is about, except that dance and Paris is involved? Maybe some Anna and the French Kiss vibes without all the cheating?

It’s Wednesday, friends, which means it is time for another WWW Wednesday post!

WWW Wednesday is hosted by Taking on a World of Words. To participate, all you have to do is simply answer the 3 W’s.

WHAT ARE YOU CURRENTLY READING?

The Song of Achilles by Madeline Miller- I have had this book on my shelves for years, and I finally am getting around to reading it! I have seen this book everywhere, so I am fully expecting for it to make me sob. I’m not super far into it yet, but I am enjoying it.

Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets by J.K. Rowling- I finished Sorcerer’s Stone last week, and just wanted to dive into book 2 right after! I think I am about halfway done with this, and it is just as precious as the first book.

WHAT HAVE YOU RECENTLY READ?

How the King of Elfhame Learned to Hate Secrets by Holly Black- I really picked this up on a whim, and enjoyed it for the most part! This is one of the most beautiful books I have ever read in terms of illustrations. However, I was a little disappointed with the content and wanted more of Jude and Cardan together rather than separately.

Legendborn by Tracy Deonn- I was really hesitant going into this, because I tried to read it back in January and felt very overwhelmed by the world building. I set it down about 200 pages in, but decided to pick it up again this week with the help of the audiobook. And I’m not sure what changed for me, but I loved this story so much. It had my heart racing and I never knew what would happen next. 5/5 stars!

WHAT WILL YOU READ NEXT?

Girl, Serpent, Dove by Melissa Bashardoust- This is a repeat from last week, but I started Song of Achilles instead of this! This is a Persian inspired fantasy following a girl with a poisonous touch, so it sounds like a lot of fun. Also the cover? I am obsessed.

Blood & Honey by Shelby Mahurin- I just realized how similar these covers are to one another after seeing them side by side. But this is the sequel to Serpent & Dove, which I read last September. I’ll probably need a refresher since it’s been awhile since I’ve read it, but I would like to get to the sequel sooner rather than later!

WHAT ARE YOU CURRENTLY READING?

Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone by J.K. Rowling- My friend has been begging me to read this series for months now, and so I finally decided to bite the bullet and borrow the audiobook from the library. I am about 60% of the way through, and I am really enjoying it! I wish J.K. Rowling wasn’t a horrible person so I would feel less guilty liking this.

Legendborn by Tracy Deonn- I started reading this book back in January, but just couldn’t get into it because I felt like there was a lot of info-dumping. So, I decided I am going to try listening to the audiobook while following along and hopefully that works better for me. Everyone loves this book, and I really want to, too!

WHAT HAVE YOU RECENTLY READ?

Allegedly by Tiffany D. Jackson- WOW, Tiffany D. Jackson has done it again! This book has officially pushed Tiffany D. Jackson onto my list of favorite authors. I flew through this book in essentially 3 sittings, because I just could not put it down. I’m not quite sure how I feel about the ending yet (if you’ve read it, you know what I’m talking about), but this is definitely a 5 star read for me.

Get a Life, Chloe Brown by Talia Hibbert- I had heard so much about this book, and I love enemies to lovers so I was hoping for a fun, angsty romance. While it was still really cute and fun, I think my expectations were just a tad too high. I am happy I read it, but it’s not a new favorite romance of mine.

What Will You Read Next?

Girl, Serpent, Thorn by Melissa Bashardoust- This book has been on my shelves for months, and I finally have the audiobook available to me, so I think I will listen and follow along, like I plan to with Legendborn. This is a Persian inspired fantasy with a girl who has a poisonous touch (Shatter Me vibes?).

So This is Love by Elizabeth Lim- I don’t know if I’ll actually pick this up next, because the other two Twisted Tale books I’ve read haven’t been my favorite. But I am a sucker for a Cinderella retelling, so I might give this one a try!

WHAT ARE YOU CURRENTLY READING?

Pride and Premeditation by Tirzah Price- This is an ARC I received from NetGalley and I am absolutely loving it! This is a Pride and Prejudice retelling with a murder mystery thrown in. It’s very funny and clever, and also has some great feminist themes throughout! I’m hoping I’ll finish this today.

Sweet & Bitter Magic by Adrienne Tooley- This is another ARC that I am just having so much fun with. This is a standalone fantasy that follows two witches, one who steals love and one who is trying to save her father from a plague. I have no idea where this story will go but I am excited to see!

WHAT HAVE YOU RECENTLY READ?

A Touch of Darkness by Scarlett St. Clair- I loved this one so much! This is a modern day Hades and Persephone retelling, and it was just so much fun. If you are looking for a trashy, flirty, fun new adult romance, this is definitely one to consider! I already put in a hold for book two through my library.

Raybearer by Jordan Ifueko- If you like well-thought out, intricate worlds, this is definitely a book for you! This is a high fantasy novel that takes inspiration from west African culture. I also really enjoyed this read, although it was a bit dense for me!

What Will You Read Next?

The Once and Future Witch by Alix E. Harrow- I have this book available for me through my library for another 10 days, so hypothetically I do want to get to it but I don’t know if I will. I’m not sure if I’m in the mood for another chunk fantasy novel right now, so I guess we’ll see! If you read it and think I should give it a chance, please let me know in the comments!

Allegedly by Tiffany D. Jackson- I love Tiffany D. Jackson, so this book will definitely be a priority for me this month (and I have to do a book review on it for school). This is another YA thriller/mystery, and I have high expectations.

WHAT ARE YOU CURRENTLY READING?

Raybearer by Jordan Ifueko- I really picked this book up on a whim and I’m really happy that I did! This is a west African inspired fantasy with a very complex world. It is absolutely captivating and I keep finding myself sucked into this world! I am hoping to finish it soon, although I am having trouble focusing with all my school work.

We are All Completely Beside Ourselves by Karen Joy Fowler- Speaking of school work, this is a book I am currently reading for an English class. Literary fiction is never something I have gravitated towards, so reading this has been a unique experience. But so far I am enjoying the audiobook, even if I wouldn’t have picked it up on my own.

WHAT HAVE YOU RECENTLY READ?

Black Enough by various authors- I just finished up this anthology today and absolutely loved it! There was not a single short story I disliked, and I loved listening to so many different stories from Black authors from all backgrounds. I would highly recommend picking this up!

A Dance of Silver and Shadow by Melanie Cellier- I had really mixed feelings about this when I first finished it, but now that I’ve had time to process it, I can say it was an overall enjoyable read! It definitely relied pretty heavily on some common YA tropes, but it was cute and fun and I will be continuing with the series!

WHAT WILL YOU READ NEXT?

Sweet & Bitter Magic by Adrienne Tooley- This is a book I need to get to next, because I need to finish it before it comes out March 9! I honestly have no idea what this is about, but the cover is stunning and it has been compared to Girls of Paper and Fire, so I have high expectations.

A Touch of Darkness by Scarlett St. Clair- I am so excited for this book because it has been hyped up so much (will I be disappointed? Probably). But this is a modern day Hades and Persephone retelling so I have high hopes because I love their story so much.

WWW Wednesday: 1.27.2021

I haven’t done one of these posts in awhile, which is a shame because I think they are just so much fun!

Along with that, I think that everyone should know that Nicola Yoon’s newest novel has a cover reveal TODAY, and I could not be more excited. She is one of my auto buy author’s, so I can guarantee that I will be preordering my copy as soon as it is available.

WWW Wednesday is hosted by Taking on a World of Words. To participate, all you have to do is simply answer the 3 W’s.

WHAT ARE YOU CURRENTLY READING?

Winter by Marissa Meyer- If you aren’t new here, you KNOW how many TBRs this has been on (maybe 4 in the past 6 months?). Well, I have finally started the conclusion to The Lunar Chronicles! I don’t know why I waited so long because being back in this world with these characters has been so comforting. I am about 50% of the way through and feel like it might be a new favorite of mine.

A Deadly Education by Naomi Novik- A few months ago I had said I wanted to give a few authors whose books I didn’t love in the past a second chance. So, I have been on the waitlist for this book for literally 4 months and finally got a copy. However, I have been so slumpy lately that I haven’t been able to sit down and read more than 20 pages at a time, so I’m not sure if I will be committing to finishing this right now. I have enjoyed what I’ve read so far, I just really need a break from super complex, brand new fantasy worlds.

WHAT HAVE YOU RECENTLY FINISHED?

Aru Shah and the End of Time by Roshani Chokshi- Roshani Chokshi was another author I wanted to give a second chance to after not loving The Star Touched Queen. I did enjoy this book significantly more than that one, even, though I felt like it dragged a bit (especially for a middle grade novel). However, I loved the Hindu mythology in this so much, and would definitely consider reading the rest of the series if I want to read some more middle grade.

Milk and Honey by Rupi Kaur- I am in a poetry writing class right now, which is a struggle because I have never read poetry outside of class ever. So, I am trying to expose myself to more poetry (if you have any suggestions, please leave them in the comments). I really enjoyed most of this, it was a quick read, and it made me reflect on life. I don’t think I would go back and ponder over it, but overall it was a good reading experience.

WHAT WILL YOU READ NEXT?

When I tell you I have literally no idea what I’ll be reading next, I mean it. I have been so slumpy and so I have really just been picking up the books I am in the mood to read at that time. But, here are a few I would ideally like to get to by next week:

We Want Our Bodies Back by Jessica Care Moore- For my literary publishing class we had to pick out a book of poetry to review, and this is the one I picked out. I came across it at a bookstore over the summer and thought it looked really interesting, hence why I picked it for my project.

Rules for Being a Girl by Candace Bushnell and Katie Cotugno- I honestly put in a hold for this audiobook quite randomly, and it expires in 10 days. I have heard good things about this book so once I am done listening to Winter I will probably pick this up.
